Unit history

The Navy came to Cornell University’s corner of the Ivy League in June 1942 and the unit was established on November 1, 1945. It remains an integral part of fulfilling founder Ezra Cornell's dream of "an institution where any person can get instruction in any study" by training students to become officers in the United States Navy and Marine Corps. The Cornell campus contains many memorials to those students who have served their country in past wars, from the WWI memorial on West Campus to the memorials in Anabel Taylor Hall.

Our goal remains to develop officers with the integrity, knowledge, moral and physical courage to serve effectively as leaders of our sailors and Marines in the world’s finest military.

Cornell University, perched high atop the East Hill of Ithaca, NY, provides a beautiful campus and an ideal environment for training young officers. The Cornell Naval ROTC Unit is located within Barton Hall. Built in 1917 as the New York State Armory and Drill hall, Barton Hall was used to house airplanes and soldiers in training for the World Wars. It now contains a 200m track, basketball courts, the Hart Memorial Library, and the Wortham Museum. Located in the middle of the campus, the Unit provides easy access to the numerous dining facilities, libraries, computing centers and athletic complexes on campus. The Unit itself contains its own facilities for student use including study areas, a weight room, a computer room and furnished lounge area with locker rooms, cable TV, and video game systems.

The Unit provides a focus for the Naval ROTC program at Cornell. It is the place where Midshipmen come to meet with their advisors, to get their uniforms and books, and to attend their Naval Science classes. In addition, the Unit maintains good relations with East Shore Sailing on Lake Cayuga, where Midshipmen frequently sail and the sailing team practices. From its proud history to its current resources, Cornell University is an excellent location to train future officers.
